Textile collections in the time of National Socialism

So far, textiles have rarely been the focus of provenance research. This emerges from a comprehensive research into the acquisition of the costume collection from the possession of the painter Paul Prött in 1943, which was carried out by the Deutsches Textilmuseum Krefeld. The collection came to the fabric collection of the textile engineering school in Krefeld in 1943, the predecessor of the Deutsches Textilmuseum.

In order to open the discussion about this type of material and to show that there is also a need for research here, the Deutsches Textilmuseum invited researchers to an international symposium in Krefeld in September 2017 to collect the few case studies.

Of particular interest were the connections between European collectors and collections, but also the international interdependencies and mechanisms of the art trade, the recording of acting state organs and the protagonists who appear.

At the 2017 Krefeld Conference, it became clear that there was a need to be able to access a directory of all known actors for further provenance research on textiles. This is the task of the editors of this volume, listing the actors listed in the articles and also researched and providing them with further information. These include collectors, dealers and government employees. The compilation presented here is intended to serve as a working tool and represents the first step towards a directory that can be expanded. The reader is requested to provide additional information. Please send an email to textilmuseum@krefeld.de
